This device has a built in Wi-Fi beacon feature which is used primarily for two things. Once, during setting it up you can connect your smartphone and tablet with it using its own Wi-Fi and then connect it to external wireless connection. Another time when this feature is used is when guest mode is ON.
In guest mode, unknown user devices can connect to Chromecast without having to connect to your home wireless network. Hence many devices can set up Chromecast to your Chromecast and do various functions without sharing your W-Fi password with them. There are many things you can do with Chromecast now.
Basic usage of Chromecast after Google Chromecast setup includes connecting it to your smartphone and tablet and streaming from services like Netflix to which you must have subscribed into your connected device. The best part of this streaming is that it is nothing like screen mirroring. Screen mirroring requires host device to be awake at all the time and it mirrors everything including message and call notifications.
Difference between casting and mirroring:
In screen casting, you have to download Google cast app in your smartphone and then supported apps such as Netflix will have a soft key overlay on top of them while running. Just hit that overlay and within a minute your content will be streaming on bigger screen. Chromecast has not started mirroring content, it has taken the control of content over from your smartphone. ‘
This means that you can now use your smartphone in any way you like as suggested by Chromecast help. You can also switch it off and use another device to connect to Chromecast and switch it off if necessary. This saves a lot of productivity and battery. Another thing you can do is play games on Chromecast now. Since content is mirrored on it, there are many games developed which let you use your smartphone as a remote control and you can play multiplayer games on Chromecast even using guest mode.
Many developers have jumped aboard the platform now and there are thousands of apps for this device as seen on Chromecast support. It has been so successful that in form of an annual update, an upgraded hardware of Chromecast 2.0 as well as Chromecast audio has been released.
Chromecast works primarily with wireless internet and if there are any issues with it, wired internet using Ethernet adapter will also work fine. Users have also tried to use public hotspots which also include many of the Xfinity hotspots over the areas in USA. Since they are free and they are fitted across areas near houses, it seems to be a smart move to use them accordingly.
However, there is a workaround. Many of public hotspots are just connect and go. They are easy to use but since they are easy to connect and have next to no security, speed deteriorates and there is a significant chance any hacker might look into your data.
Another public hotspot is like we get to use in fast food centres with splash screens. These have securities but their issues. Chromecast can be used with a public hotspot with no security but bandwidth will be around a maxed out 1Mbps which is not ideal for streaming.
Splash screen public hotspots are not supported by Chromecast and if your Xfinity has a splash screen, which it actually has most of the time, there is no chance that you can use it as you intend to.
