MultiChoice recently announced that it has expanded its internet television service, DStv Now to the Google Chromecast. This will allow the users of Chromecast to cast the DStv channels and catch up movies and videos to their TVs. The company said that it is expanding to DStv Extra and Compact subscribers along with supporting the Chromecast. The Live Tv and DStv Catch up content on DStv Now will be as per the DStv package you are on.
Catch up Tv and Live Tv content will now be determined based on the package someone subscribes to. DStv Extra will have the access to 47 channels on the go, while DStv Compact customers will get 36 channels. The premium subscribers of DStv already have the access to 64 channels. The customers can register up to four devices for DStv Now on the same account. For setting them you will need a DStv Connect ID account.
MultiChoice said that these features will be available to the DStv Compact and Extra customers at no extra cost during the first quarter of the coming new financial year. The support of Chromecast has been expected to come in the next month of April. The company also added that the support of Airplay is also expected to launch in the coming April.
The DStv digital media head Graeme Cumming said in a statement that the option form sharing the content from mobile phone devices to television is something that the customers have asking for, for a while. He also said the company is currently working on securing the rights to perform similar functions using Apple Airplay.
The broadcaster didn’t provide any number though it said that DStv has now grown by 90 percent in the past 12 months. It said that during the past one year, more than 4m titles were played across the live tv, catch up and downloads. These titles were split across the online platform 38 %, Android apps 33%, and iOS apps 30%. In addition to the 90 percent growth in DStv Now users, the company also saw an increase in engagement with almost four times as many series and movies being viewed in December 2016 as compared to December 2015. He further added that the number of video plays on DStv platform has grown by more than 500% along with the app plays up by 300%.
The usage of DStv Now has peaked in 2016 with live sporting events such as ICC Cricket World cup, The Olympics, Super Rugby, and the Springboks’ end of the year tour to Europe and the UK said Cumming in a statement.
To use DStv Now on Chromecast the users will be needed to follow these steps:
- Connect your Android device to a wi-fi network.
- Open the DStv Now app and select the content that you want to watch.
- After that press the cast button in the app.
- Now enjoy viewing on the big screen.
